HALF TERM HOMEWORK

To the right is a photo that I chose as one that I feel accurately represents the star persona of our lead singer. It is also the image I am currently working on to produce a mock-up magazine add.

1. Our star persona is meant to represent a modern youth in a relatively general sense. This is communicated through the combination of quite smart, casual and 'vintage' looking clothing; contrasting with the slightly messy hair, the cigarette and the slightly lopsided stance. Our star persona, to me, represents materialism and youth. we were never trying to create a persona with any behavioural extremities, i.e. not a binge drinker or 'bad boy' and not notably studious or well mannered. This persona also works well with the lyrics, although the song itself - without context - may imply a sort of culture of binge drinking and partying, we are providing a context (through techniques in the music video, digipack etc.) in which our lead works in collaboration with our choice of song.

2. The general idea for maintaining continuity is firstly by making sure we do not get to influenced by the lyrics of the song, as this would lead to all of our products relating directly to track which would make our overall project less convincing.

3. Digi-pack cover

- Bold design: our chosen song is very upbeat, with a simple and catchy riff. I think this should be represented through a very simple, bold and possibly colourful design.

- All members of the band should be in some way noted or referenced in the digi-pack, as apposed to in the magazine add where I would argue that our lead singer would effectively communicate the band's image himself.

Magazine add

update 2 on magazine cover mock-up

- This is a basic idea I had for the magazine add (unfinished)

- As mentioned previously, I feel that our lead communicates the image of the band himself, and can act almost as a band representative in magazine add.

- I used an opaque black paint brush to create dark faded affect around him, using fewer strokes as i got toward the middle, in an attempt to highlight him and make him stand out.

- I also used 'darken' on the layer to make him sit nicely on the white background as well as rubbing out with an opaque rubber, areas where the jagged outline of the image clashed with the background.

- I tampered with the levels of the image to make him further defined.

- I used the layer filter 'paint daubs' to give him a slightly more 'vintage' look

Shooting day 2

Today we filmed some performance shots to go onto our music video. We had a guitar and a lead singer and we filmed in a room with a empty white wall. We choose this room because the background wouldn't look busy and distract away from the star. The guitarist is in the background this is to help draw attention to the star and disguise the fact that the guitar is acoustic and not electric. We will check in editing to see if this works but more performance shots may need to be done to replace the acoustic guitar which may look out of place.

Rough cut my thoughts

I think that the rough cut was good in many ways. Our cuts were on the beat which gave it a good flow with the music and made it very conventional. In our music video we used the starting chords to cut between shots of edgar on the couch. i think that this worked well it had a lot of cuts that a music video should have including close ups of our star which is one of Goodwins points about the demands of the record label. (pic of Edgar's face) We are not going to change this in our final cut.
However later on in the footage when the band is performing there is a lack of good cuts that a music video need to be visually interesting so we intend to add a new performance piece to allow us more cuts. This is important because at the moment we only have an acoustic guitar and the song involves a electric guitar this means that rather than being a serious performance it looks almost comical so to fix this we will involve this new performance that has a electric guitar this will be in the songs electric guitar solo. (pic of acoustic)
Another issue that we may look into is the ending where edgar sits into the chair he began in another idea is to end with the end of the performance as the narrative ends when the performance becomes more important, the guitar solo lends itself to a more exiting and upbeat footage, the chair could look out of place. However it does link the end of the song and the start very well and makes the narrative last throughout the footage and cutting it could lead to it looking like two separate music video poorly spliced together. (chair)
We will look into using colour correction in the performance section of the video to make it look more distinctive from the narrative and also to make the guitar in the background look visually appealing with the lighting shining on the front.
All together i think that the rough cuts works well and with the new footage added on and with some tinkering of the footage and make it look smother and less rough. It will also involve more cuts more frequently.

rough cut

We are currently rendering and uploading our rough cut to youtube. The outcome so far has been pretty promising, however there are a few areas in the master shot that don't work and we will need to film more performance shots as the only one we have at the moment is a sort of second master shot with one acoustic guitar and edgar (our performer) singing. we still have a large chunks of the master shot that need other shots added to it to make the video more visually interesting. The setting for the next performance shots will be at my house where we have a wide range of different instruments. We will make use of the electric guitar, bass and drum-kit.

We need to begin colour correction on our work, chopping shots down and generally making everything a bit neater.

Rough cut

In today's lesson, we converted and uploaded to Youtube our product's rough cut. The piece is less refined, and we still have a lot of footage to add, however, it shows a very good idea of what we want to achieve as a final piece. For the final piece, we need more performance parts mainly, with better focus on instruments, as currently, we're seen using an acoustic guitar, which is obviously the wrong instrument. To do this we will use another filming slot and use Ahren's house to use proper instruments,   and possibly re-do some specific parts, such as the guitar solo.
One of the main tweaks with the footage today, was with the dolly shot of the bedroom. I felt as though it was needed before the flashback, and just as I was shown to be up on the landing. It worked well in the end, as there was a good cause/effect portrayal. Another way we fattened out the footage content was to recycle out-takes, that are especially effective as they have an authenticity to them that acting does not give. They also look a lot rougher, making for effective footage for our narrative.
In terms of what I'd like to keep for the final cut, my favourite scene so far is the dolly/flashback shot - along with recycled footage to avoid the less than satisfactory master shot footage, I think it's a very stylish and flowing part of our narrative.
My least favourite part of the rough cut is the ending, where I'm shown to be sitting back on the chair, where I started. I don't like how for about 10 seconds of footage, I'm completely static, and it also dampens the effect of the music video, which shouldn't be as tame as this shot shows to be.

Half Term Homework

Advanced Portfolio Half Term Homework:

You must think seriously now about how your music video works in combination with your magazine advert (advertising the digi-pack) and the digi-pack cover (at least 4 sides).

Answer the following questions:

1.       What is your finalised star persona? Include a photograph of your star that best communicates their persona. Discuss what ideas/ideologies they communicate (materialism, rebellion, innocence, the cultural “ideal”, alternative to the “ideal” etc.). How do they communicate these ideas? How is their persona expressed visually? (costume, hair, makeup, bogy language, lighting, framing etc) How is it expressed through lyrics, genre?

2.       How are you going to ensure continuity between the 3 products? Remember your digi-pack cover cannot look like a single (can’t be images from the music video) but an album. Compare your ideas for the digi pack cover with professional promo images. A digi-pack is a combination of audio and video (a cd and a dvd with special features such as a few music videos or concert videos)

3.       Write down all of your individual or group ideas for the digi-pack cover and magazine advert. Ideas for costume, setting, lighting, colour, hair, makeup, Photoshop special effects etc. If you can do some mock ups of your own, or experiment with effects in photoshop.

Word count : 500 words minimum

ALSO Catch up with your blogging. Make sure Target audience work is complete and you have done at least 25 individual posts since the start of the project! It is not just the amount that counts though but the content!

Ideas for the band name

Here are our ideas for what the band should be called. We needed a band name that would fit in with the genre and the general image of the band. Ideas ranged from using the star persona name in the band to a more traditional indie rock name. The ones that were put into bold and capital letters were our final shortlist of ideas

  • Ain't no band
  • Belkin
  • speakers blown out
  • ALLO FEEDBACK
  • HI FEEDBACK
  • FEEDBACK
  • LO FEEDBACK
  • NO! FEEDBACK!!
  • FEEDBACK?
  • timmy and the high fives
  • amplified
  • pick ups
  • the frets
  • g string (the string)
  • the string
  • no fly
  • the jet maybe
  • nudist beach
  • insert band name here
  • kim novak
  • connor is a giant ____
  • stfu
  • fool
  • mr T's magic roundabout
  • federal resserve
  • clipboard
  • antagonist
  • peril
  • protagonist
  • engima
  • vertigo
  • man
The idea we decided on was LO FEEDBACK because the band is more relaxed and feedback is from a amplifier which fits to the band.

Our current stage

Right now we are in the process of putting together the rough cut of our music video. On wednesday, we filmed the other half of the piece which is the main performance, which we often refer to as a second master shot, and now we have enough footage to complete the song. Editing is tricky, especially when we all have infividual preferences and ideas as to how the video should be put together, but I think the difference in opinion makes for more stimulating work, as we're all bringing something to the table.
Filming the performance was also a challenge, as we intended to invite many people to perform with us as dancers for our party, however our alotted filming time took that out of the question, as first period of a school day meant people were either going to be attending their lesson, or remain absent from college. In the end, we decided to just get the whole thing done with simple lighting (two floods), a plain white backround with myself and Jack performing. Once we got into gear with the actual performance, it only took once shot to get a satisfying result which I consider a great success. Jack's voluntary guitar playing in the backround was effective as it gave our band's image a more humble image, as opposed to an all out concert with fireworks, flashing lights, a complete band, ect.

Now that we have all of the footage to complete 4 minutes of video, I expect we will spend the rest of our editing time intergrating the music video and performance video into an effective movie. We still have to create a digi-pack and magazine cover, however.
Ahren has recently drafted us with a rough idea for a magazine cover that uses one of my own facebook photos:

I think this is an effective design, as it shows off the kind of indy style we want to represent, as well as possibly showing a side of the band that takes itself a little less seriously. (Excuse the size, I'm still learning computers)

Colour Corrections

I have been experimenting with different colour corrections for our shots in Final Cut. We may use these in the end result to show things like atmosphere or mood. I thought that in the performance shot, it wasn't so necessary to manipulate the colour, as the idea of these shots is to present the band performing more than anything else, and any kind of atmosphere or emotion should be expressed within the main music video narrative.

Here, I have given the shot a red tint.

Here I have increased the blue-ness of the shot.

Here I have almost completely de-saturated the colour of the shot.

storyboard

This is our main storyboard. We may deviate from the original plans in the future.

Progress so far.

So far things have been running relatively smoothly: we filmed most needed shots at James' house however did encounter a few problems due to being slightly unprepared. Our main performer hadn't memorised all of the lyrics to our track, something that could have been highly detrimental to the effectiveness of our master shot, so in order to rectify the problem we created large print outs of the lyrics and stuck them around the house in the route that we would take, just out of the view of the camera so that as and when the performer needed to view the lyrics they could glance over at them.

We still have a small amount of filming to be done in the process of editing but this can be almost entirely at college.

plans following this week are mainly to finish editing and filming and have the rough cut done by Wednesday the 24th of October.

Shooting day 1

We started shooting at James house this was the narrative of our video. The video followed Edgar our star as he walked around the house the day after a party with lots of empty beer cans and bottles of alcohol around to give the feel of a big busy night. This was broken up with flashbacks of events at the party that will be triggered as he wanders around e.g. sees a broken glass and he remembers why it was broken. We briefly had some extras to help make the party look more busy however they had to leave so most of the footage is of a few people. This means we will have to be careful when editing or the party will look ironic and not a exiting large party that we intended. Also we will have to film some performance to go with parts of the song that a narrative would not be appropriate for. We used several studio lights and smaller desk lights to light the shot. We also cut holes into a piece of paper to give a venetian blind effect when the star wakes up however this may need colour correcting to make it stand our more.

Mag cover (Suggestion)

This is very much a work in progress (i.e. I don't think we're going to call the magazine 'music') but this is my general idea/suggestion for how the magazine cover should look. I feel like it captures our star persona in conveying a person who isn't pretentious or 'loutish' but rather a relatively normal person with the occasional tendency to go out partying and getting drunk. This is communicated through the combination of the costume and the cigarette which both express different things in media terms.

Progress so far

Progress so far:

So far...
We have just finished uploading our rough cut footage onto Final Cut Express and we've matched our chosen music track to our master shot, and this has made me feel a lot better, because all the shots we've done now flow and look so much better when they're synced with the music track so this made me feel a lot more confident about what our Music Video will be like once it's finished.

Problems & dealing with them
When we were filming we encountered many issues, one of these was filming the master shot because we could never quite get the master shot exactly how we wanted it, as it involved a lot of moving around and seeing as this was the majority of our production in footage, it needs to be the best and most perfected piece of footage that we have. We overcame this by not giving up and continuously filming this three minute clip until we got it just how we felt it should be and that all 4 of us were happy with the result because seeing as we are all reliant on this coursework all the decisions we make need to be discussed and resolved as a group  and I definitely don't think any independent decisions can be made.
Our second biggest problem was staying focused, we found that all of us were easily distracted by questions that were related to whether the lights were in the right position or whether this was the best we could do with regards to getting that particular shot.
Personally, I would have rather filmed all the shots straight away and then watched them through and then we could have decided between our group which ones could be improved or generally made better by repeating them by adding or removing a certain feature or simply just getting our acting correct!
Another problem we found was manipulating our light to give us the effect that we required for each individual shot, of course, this required a lot of moving around, and that is a pain as these lights are huge! But we also found problems with making the 'Venetian blind' effect we needed for one of our opening shots which took some time to make and get into position with where we needed it.

analysis of music videos

Muse uprising

One of Goodwin’s points is that a music video will display characteristics of its genre this is shown in uprising because the band is seen performing the song in the video with their instruments. This is a characteristic of the rock genre in general and is in most rock music videos. This is because rock music usually makes most of its money not from sales of their songs but from tours and live performances so the use of a performance in the video shows that the record label and the band want to promote themselves as a live music experience this also shows in the use of special effects like the fuse and the explosions that will promote their concerts and make them look like a interesting band to watch live.
Another of his points is that the music lyrics and the visuals will be linked the lyrics in uprising link to the visuals of what seems to be a stereotypical country run by a dictator with propaganda signs and a hopeless population (represented by the dolls). This allows the viewer to understand what the artist wants the lyrics to mean and helps connect certain ideas to the music. In uprising the visuals link the lyrics to the idea of an underground movement going through the streets proclaiming that they should rebel against the dictatorship.
The record labels demands are clear throughout the video as the lead singer is used as a front man and the image of the band. Lots of long duration close ups are used to make the audience associate with him and also make him a recognisable figure this will help build up a larger and more loyal fan base because they will recognise the singer and associate more with the band.
The notion of looking is used on the giant evil teddy bears as we look at them through television screens and windows in houses this is probably done as a link to the theme of rebellion as the public figures are on TV and out on the street while the freedom fighters have to stay on the move and hide from to much attention. If the idea of looking was used more on the band then a different feel to the video would occur where the audience would associate more with the regime as spies looking at the band and not as the producer intended as members of this society under the regime.
Goodwin said that there are normaly intertextual references to other media products there are no clear intertextual references that I noticed but more of a general link to all movies about a dictatorship or a cold war era film about soviet Europe with the same sort of bleak depressing streets and people walking around with no hope but more as robots brain washed by the state. This allows the audience to understand the video far quicker because they can rely on information already learnt from other products and therefore the background has already been filled in and the viewer can focus instead on the song and the band making the video more memorable and linked to many films and ideas.

Mumford and sons the cave
In the music video the video breaks a convention by focusing on a different group of people playing the instruments rather than the band however Mumford and sons is a group that does not fit well with most genres because of its strange collection of musical instruments and the lack of a drummer means that breaking the convention does fit with what the band tries to achieve and separates their own genre from other genres of music.
The lyrics are about a journey and the video reflects that by the group travelling around on scooters. This means the music video is more conventional because the link is not abstract but easier to understand this alters the overall feel to the music and makes it more realistic and gritty. This makes the band seem more grown up and will attract a larger group of people and not target a small niche market. This is because everyone can understand the meaning of the video and it will fit in more with most music video that people have seen and enjoyed.
The demands of the record label can be seen with the close ups of the singer and the rest of the group throughout the music video. However the small Mexican band also get close ups they even get a closer shot than the lead singer this to seems to break the band away from most conventional music and helps to show that this band is different and new. The close ups of the other group associate us to them differently to the band they are smiling and seem happy despite wearing dusty and worn clothes whereas Mumford and sons seem less happy but wear expensive and clean clothes.
The intertextual references link this song to movies about Mexico with the choice of clothes for the band but also more modern films with the scooters travelling around the roads. This links the 2 ways of looking at south America the old fashion way of dusty fields and poor Mexicans and a more modern view of a almost tropical and modern with cars and roads this links to the lyrics with the new way of looking at the world.

Equipment

We will use a apple mac to edit and put together our music video using final cut software, we will also use the mac to make the digi-pack and the magazine advert using software like photoshop. We will use a sony Handycam to capture our music video. We will use a tripod to keep it steady and a dolly to help us create a good dolly shot. We will use 2 large flood lights and some smaller lights to light our video, a range of colour filters will be there for us to use if we decide to use them.

Performers

For our music video will be using other people as extras as well as acting ourselves in the video. These people will be the extra's in the party flashback scenes and the extras on the floor asleep as the main performer walks around. Our passed out people will not look as bad though to match the light hearted feel of the music. In our music video the extras will add the feel that the party is large and full of different people and not just a few people. The extras will mix up their clothes and shots will be selected to make them look like different people in different shots e.g. taking a jumper off to make them look like a new person. The extras will be to close to the camera or to far away in the background to stop the audience paying to much attention to them and draw attention to the star and how popular his parties are.

We will take part as well to show that this is a band and not just a solo artist this fits in with the genre as all bands will normally have a star or a front-man but he is still seen as part of a band and not a artist in his own right or deserving all the attention. The band will play a supporting role in the video they will be more important than the other people at the party.

Lighting Lesson - Notes and general overview.

We had a lesson that was purely focusing on lighting, I felt that this was beneficial to us as individuals and as a group as we now have a few more approaches to lighting our scene, for example, we are now aware of how we can exploit the focus mode on the camera to make certain parts of the shot in focus, such as a singer or actor, and make parts of the shot, such as the background, quite blurry which exaggerates how clearly we see the person/thing that is in focus.

We also learnt to use light filters, which creates that really nice "beam" effect on the lights in the shot, which is used even on Hollywood sets! We found a way to make free light filters without the outrageous cost, just simply cut up some card in a certain way (which had yet to be decided) and place it over the camera lens! As soon as my group & I saw this, we simultaneously came to the conclusion that we will be using these for the morning/opening shots to show the morning sunlight shining through the curtains onto the persons' face.

This lesson definitely proved a great help to me and my group as we are aware that every group is heavily marked on their use of lighting and techniques and I think that we can definitely make a better quality production now knowing the techniques from that video.

Music video analysis (2)

I love college: Asher Roth

Waking up scene
I chose this song because it uses techniques that we wish to use in our music video, for example: the use of the hazy, sun lit 'waking up scene' at the beginning and the idea of following the the singer through different parts of the house as he interacts with various people and things.

In the music video, a few typical hip-hop conventions are used, however, the song itself is more well known as alternative hip-hop which is likely to have made an influence on how the video was made. Firstly, the setting is a lively party scene with lots of footage and references to the use of drugs and alcohol. There's no clear cut narrative other than the fact that the 'freshmen' are having a good time at the party, this does partly follow conventions however, modern hip-hop music videos very often have no narrative whatsoever and are more a kind montage of people drinking, partying, and flaunting expensive possessions. There are no easily recognisable brands used, which goes against conventions for hip-hop music videos. There isn't a massive display of wealth or expensive possessions, although there is definitely an upper middle class college student feel to the video. This is communicated through the modern fashionable costumes and also simply the warm lighting effect created by the varying coloured lights and camera filters which enhance the overall atmosphere of euphoria.

Example: use of lighting
Shots aren't particularly close up, usually the closest being mid close up: this is probably because the song isn't particularly emotional: the aspect of a song that is usually the cue for close ups in music videos. There are many relationships between the lyrics and the visuals: for example, at 0:57 "champion at beer pong" prompts the singer to throw a ping pong ball into a cup (such is the game beer pong). A few voyeuristic shots of the female body are used, i.e. the below eye level shots of scantily-clad women at 1:05 to 1:09.

Music Video analysis

Alt J- ‘Breezeblocks’

Goodwin’s points

•Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).

•There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

•There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

•The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

•There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

•There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

Alt-J is an Indie band from Cambridge. One of the first most noticeable things about the music video to the song ‘Breezeblocks’ is that it is very dark, contributing to the feeling of sadness it is trying to convey. Most the video is played backwards, adding to the sense of anger and creating a distorted feeling especially when the fight between the man and the woman is in full swing. The reversed playback of the video is also quite typical of the indie style, purely because it is something that is not often used in music videos. There are many links between the video and the lyrics: the first two lines of the song: ‘She may contain the urge to run away but hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks’ almost prompts the image of the woman in the bath under a breeze block and just as it is technically the end of the video, sums much of its narrative and themes. Links continue throughout the song as visuals continue copy or reference the lyrics in different ways. The artists do not feature in the video, however, there are many uses of close ups to capture emotion in the actor and actresses faces, this intensifies the harsh and gloomy feel of the music video. There isn’t any immediate references or connotations of voyeurism, this may be because the song already has quite a clear narrative  and that indie music videos often tend to contradict conventions that are typically used in music videos. Alt- J aren’t massively famous at the moment, so it’s unlikely that they have made ( or at least I am not aware of) any particular references to movies, TV shows or other music videos. I think being that that band is not very well known and that they themselves are not even in the music video; I wouldn’t say that their record label is trying to sell the band through the music video but more trying to artistically convey the narrative of the song to it’s audience.

Green day- 21 Guns

The song 21 guns was written as a war protest There are many uses of stereotypical rock characteristics in this music video. Shots of the band members playing their instruments are used frequently. Jump cuts and hand held shots create a dramatic effect. The grey background and props and enclosed setting creates a gloomy atmosphere. Cuts and camera work becomes more erratic as the song the music quickens in pace and becomes louder. Frequent use of typical music video methods are used, such as, cutting on the beat. Bullets start to fly through the set at the drop of the song, further increasing the drama of the video. Relationships between the lyrics and the visuals are frequent, such as the at the first use of the lyrics “21 guns” bullets start to fly through the set, puncturing the props. Many close ups of both the actors and the musicians are taken, capturing emotion. There are a few very subtle voyeuristic references such as when the girl is captured in the mirror. An intertextual reference could be the movie ‘Transformers 2’ as it features two attractive young adults of whom appear to be on the run from the law. There is that and the fact that and the film itself features the song on several occasions.

Target Audience

Target Audience:

Who is your promotional package meant to appeal to?

People who are both male and female in their teens and early twenties, we thought that bands like The Killers also had a similar target audience and were influenced with early indie-rock music.

How will you target this market through the style/techniques you will use?

Costume - Clothes will be similar to those that are worn in the target audience, this will make the audience identify with the band a lot easier and will make the audience feel like they are similar to the band.
Promotional Package - The package itself will feature photos of alcohol and friends, which makes it easier for our Target Audience to identify with us.

Filming when and where

Where-
James house in Stapleford 37 bar lane. His house was chosen becuase it was closest to most of the group and easiest to get to from college. James had also suggested the a good location in his house for the first few shots to be established.
When-
we have decided that one of our days will be on 10th october which is a wednesday this is because everyone can get to James house in between first lesson and last lesson. Jack and Edgar have first and last however first lesson is media and because we are filming it means that we can not go to that lesson which means that we can start filming at 9 and finish at 2:40. Ahren has a lesson at 10:50 but he may not have to go however we will try to minimise the disruption this causes. If we need to shot another day then we can shoot a week later on the 17th of october.
